Shaping a Circular Blue Economy in the Mediterranean / 27-28 June in Cairo, Egypt

The Conference “Shaping a Circular Blue Economy in the Mediterranean” will take place on the 27-28 June in Cairo, Egypt

On 27-28 June 2022, the Hybrid Conference “Shaping a Circular Blue Economy in the Mediterranean” will take place at the Four Seasons Nile Boat in Cairo, Egypt.

The environmental challenges deriving from our current economic/development model are critical, especially in the Mediterranean region, which is one of the most sensitive to climate change in the world. Aware of these challenges, societies and governments must strive to initiate reforms that can accelerate the adoption of strategies allowing the transition to more sustainable models of production and consumption. Regional cooperation among Mediterranean countries is critical in achieving a more Circular Economy and preserving healthy marine and coastal ecosystems while boosting competitiveness in key blue economy sectors.

This Conference will foster exchange between key actors of blue economy sectors bringing together public authorities, business, research, and civil society representatives from both shores of the Mediterranean to shape a more circular blue economy in the Region.

On the first day, the importance of regional cooperation, public-private partnerships, science-business collaborations, and civil society inclusion will be discussed. Participants will be informed about current and future plans for developing a Circular Blue Economy, barriers and solutions related to circular blue economy entrepreneurship, challenges and opportunities of the fisheries sector, projects’ experiences and best practices, innovative tools, and recommendations for enhancing the Circular Economy transition.

On the second day, participants will have the chance to gain on-site “blue economy experience” during a field visit.

The Conference is organized in the frame of the Interreg MED project “BLUEfasma” (https://bluefasma.interreg-med.eu/), which is coordinated by the University of Patras, Greece. The event is co-organized by Dynamic Vision, Greece, and DCarbon, Egypt, and will be broadcasted through the Circle the MED Forum platform.

BLUEfasma project focuses on the sectors of fisheries and aquaculture, aspiring to trigger change and increase the sector’s low Circular Economy innovation performance through the provision of tailored tools and the implementation of BLUEfasma Living Labs in 11 territories in 9 Mediterranean countries (Cyprus, France, Croatia, Greece, Montenegro, Malta, Italy, Spain, Portugal).
